POSITION DESCRIPTION STATEMENT (PDS)
Title: Supply Chain Manager
Reports To: Controller
I. Purpose of Position
This hands-on position will be viewed as the subject matter expert whose primary
responsibilities will be to develop and implement global sourcing strategies
while managing the business relationships and performance of our supplier base.
Direct the activities of supply chain department in execution of sourcing
strategies. Lead cross-functional teams in the supplier selection process.
Establish and manage inventory throughout the supply chain in a cost efficient
manner considering the total cost of acquisition/ownership. Position requires
travel (domestic and international) up to 10%.
II. Key Responsibilities
• Coordinate with Engineering to engage suppliers in concept phase of designs
associated with product development activities.
• Identify new sources of supply, along with Engineering, for new technologies,
equipment, or processes being utilized in product development and the
qualification of these new suppliers.
• Development of material plans at prototype and scale up phases including cost
estimates, risk, and quality assessments.
• Recommend existing or potential sources of supply and insure that material is
only procured from approved Gleason suppliers.
• Identify long lead time and/or critical components that present business risk
and drive potential secondary sources and other risk mitigation strategies.
• Develop and manage implementation of global sourcing strategies.
• Understand and publish trend analyses of cost drivers for key components.
• Ensure data base integrity of materials under management including but not
limited to A,B,C designation, material group, country of origin, Harmonized
Tariff codes, standard cost, supplier information etc.
• Negotiate and manage kanban, pull replenishment, consignment contracts or
supply agreements with all suppliers.
• Establish and maintain appropriate inventory levels that balance business risk
and service level requirements with investment.
• Identify and Manage supplier performance metrics and corrective actions as
required. Identify and execute continuous productivity, cost and/or process
improvements with suppliers based upon key cost drivers.
• Insure that business readiness/supplier capacity actions are communicated with
suppliers periodically including demand projections.
• Participate in and lead groups within the Gleason North American Supply Chain
function on corporate sourcing initiatives.
• Initiate regular, periodic supplier meetings – either at supplier, or in-house
to review performance, new opportunities, cost reductions, etc.
• Lead teams in new supplier qualifications as required. E.g. Outsourcing
opportunities, Low Cost Region initiatives, supplier replacement etc.
• Develop reclamation strategies for inventory, scrap, and/or equipment. Manage
transition for obsolete material to minimize inventory write-offs.

Internal:
Daily interaction with Design Engineering, Production, Accounting, logistics and
Service Administration. Periodic interactions with Sales and Software
Engineering personnel

Daily interactions with suppliers and Gleason Supply Chain personnel

V. Background and Skill
• BS/BA Degree required; MS/MA/MBA preferred.
• APICS certification and/or ISM certification preferred.
• 5-7 years experience in the following disciplines; supply chain management,
sourcing strategies, general business management, demand or materials
management, operational management utilizing ERP (SAP preferred) systems.
• 4+ years experience in buying and expediting from a global supplier base.
• General knowledge of global logistics, compliance, NAFTA, C-TPAT, Incoterms,
HTS, etc.
• Specialized training in “lean manufacturing/lean enterprise” concepts,
implementation and management
• Demonstrated application knowledge in purchase price cost analyses.
• Ability to read and interpret part drawings including tolerances and GD&T
requirements.
• Inventory management skills including hands-on utilization of MRP, Kanban,
cycle counting, Pareto, root cause analysis.
• Modern material handling knowledge, warehouse security, part presentation, bar
coding, etc.
• Ability to utilize competitive knowledge to determine business strategies and
decisions.
• Demonstrated strong negotiation techniques.
• Advanced written and verbal communication skills.
• Must be able to understand and interpret contractual language.
